But the lead has revealed there’s hope the beloved show could return.

He said: “There was talk from one of the movie distributors about making a film version of Doc Martin and my answer at the moment, two years on from finishing the 10th and final series, is never say never - it could happen.

“We did film a couple of feature-length Christmas specials which ran to 90 and 120 minutes and that proved we could pull it off, when it comes to making a longer version of Doc Martin. So it is possible.”

Ratings for the gentle drama remained impressive, peaking at 10m and never falling below 5m.

Another ITV favourite, Downton Abbey, became box office gold when it transitioned to the big screen.

For now, Martin will return to the channel in hard-hitting, county lines drugs drama Out There later this month.

Martin and his wife Philppa Braithwaite, the producer of the comedy drama, talked about options for a spin-off show after the final episode on Christmas Day in 2022.

These included Baby Doc, an origin story about Doc Martin’s early years.

Before moving to Cornwall, it was known that the fictitious GP spent years as an acclaimed surgeon before quitting the operating room after developing an aversion to blood.
