Leskanich was born in Topeka, Kansas, but moved to the United Kingdom in 1976.
The pop singer joined Cambridge band The Waves in 1978, where she took control of the vocals and keyboards.
Their self-titled album wasn't released until 1985 - but it immediately shot to success.
The band was nominated for a Grammy Award and shot into the top ten spot in both the US and UK charts.
