LIAM Payne and Cheryl Tweedy kept the charade of their relationship going until July last year — five months after The Sun revealed they had split.
But Liam has finally confessed we were correct and they had already broken up before they walked the red carpet together at the Brit Awards in February.
Asked when they separated, he said it was around the release of his steamy single with Rita Ora, For You, which came out in January 2018.
He said: “We broke up around For You, actually, which is quite interesting.” Going on to praise Rita, Liam added: “It was great, I really enjoyed making it.
“It was a lot of fun. She’s great to work with as well. I don’t know anyone who works harder.”
The pair delivered a raunchy performance of the track at the Brits, which Cheryl watched from the audience while insisting there were no cracks in their relationship.
Opening up about what went wrong, Liam admitted he and the former Girls Aloud singer had been struggling to even leave the house together because they were constantly recognised.
Speaking on Jessie Ware's Table Manners podcast, out tomorrow, he said: “I think we kind of rubbed off on each other a little bit in that way. In a bad way, actually. All of that stuff puts so much pressure on a relationship.
“For her, if you were going out somewhere, it would take so long to get out of the door because you’re just so worried.”
But Liam, who is now loved up with model Maya Henry, said he is in a better place after his time in One Direction.
Speaking about the band, he said: “We were definitely overworked. I had no personal life, I learnt nothing about myself.
“I remember getting to therapy and the guy was like, ‘What do you like to do?’
“I haven’t got a clue. I just lived so long as this reclusive pop star who was afraid of people, who just stayed inside all the time. I needed to stop, definitely. It would have killed me.”
1D’s split in 2016 was devastating for fans, but it did Liam the world of good.
Cheryl has since come out and denied that the pair split months before their official separation statement.

Meghan's homing in
FORGET All About That Bass. For Meghan Trainor it’s All About That Place as she’s started house-hunting in the UK.
She was in Salford on Monday for the first round of auditions for The Voice UK.
She has joined the show as a coach alongside Olly Murs, who showed off a shockingly bleached new hairstyle.
But Meghan will soon be spending even more time here as she is keen to put down roots in London.
I’m told she has been staying at the capital’s five-star Mandarin Oriental and thinks now is a good time to buy.
A source said: “After finding out she’s going to be spending a large chunk of her time in the UK.
"Meghan’s decided to buy a place in London to use as a base.
“With house prices dropping because of Brexit, she has decided now is the right time to invest.
"Meghan isn’t just a pretty face, she’s completely clued up.”
If she fancies giving me some financial advice, I’d be more than grateful . . .

Busy Raye just can't Bey quiet
BEYONCE has a secret weapon when it comes to her new album – but the project isn’t being kept as schtum as she might like.
The superstar is famously private about her music before it is officially announced, but British singer-songwriter Raye has let slip she has been working with Bey again, after helping out on her Lion King album this summer.
In an exclusive interview, Raye, right, said: “It is top secret with big artists. But I really, really loved her team and the whole vibe and, yeah, we are definitely working together on some new things.
“But there’s nothing much more I can really say, obviously. Her team is phenomenal. Beyonce is such an icon and she’s just so normal and lovely.”
And Raye has plenty of her own music too, with a debut album set to arrive next year. The Londoner has been shooting up the charts with her track Love Me Again, after Jess Glynne recorded a verse for it.
Raye said: “She texted me out of the blue like, ‘Raye, I love this song and I want everyone to hear it – let me do a remix.’ She’s amazing. I love it when women go out of their way to support other women.”

SCARLETT JOHANSSON has confirmed she would be interested in playing Dolly Parton in a biopic of the legend’s life, after Dolly named the actress as the ideal woman to portray her.
But Scarlett added: “Those are big shoes to fill.”
Kath a shooting star
KATHERINE Jenkins has confirmed my story from April that she has shot her first major film role.
I told how the Welsh mezzo-soprano had landed a role opposite Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy in Minamata.
The movie is about a photographer who uncovered the secret poisoning of a Japanese coastal community during the war.
Speaking for the first time about her scenes, Katherine said: “I really enjoyed the experience.
“I was totally out of my comfort zone but it’s a story I really care about. I don’t think it will be released until 2020, but it was really exciting, I’d like to do more.”

ARIANA Grande has flown her dad Edward to the UK for the final British night of her 102-date Sweetener world tour, after reconciling with him last year.

Victoria's got fright fever
IF you’re trying to convince the world you are lighthearted and fun, try doing it with a smile.
Victoria Beckham staged a baffling reimagining of the Bee Gees' Stayin’ Alive by strutting through Times Square performing the iconic moves of Saturday Night fever star John Travolta apparently to promote her new lipstick range.
I can’t quite see the link either.
But she managed to perform the stunt without cracking so much as a smirk in the toe-curling video uploaded yesterday.
All together now, “Ah, ah, ah, ah . . . awful.”
Below, a Strictly dance veteran gives his verdict on her moves.
Expert verdict
STRICTLY dance pro Robin Windsor gave his verdict on Posh’s dance moves.
He says: "She certainly knows how to pop a hip and can definitely strut her stuff.
"I like her loose, contemporary feel to her choice of costume.
"Her clicking could have been a little sharper and more precise. I think she is full of the right attitude and sass.
"I was impressed with her turn with a flick, though it could have been smoother. She has definite potential.
"I think we should start a campaign to get 7 her on Strictly."
