Emmerdale viewers in tears as Robert Sugden turns himself into the police to save Aaron Dingle

EMMERDALE viewers were in tears as Robert Sugden turned himself into the police in order to save his husband Aaron Dingle.

The fan-favourite couple have been on the run following the death of rapist Lee Posner, who Robert beat up after he attacked his sister Victoria.

Robert and Aaron planned to run away to France together but things went south when police managed to find their way to the cottage they were staying in.

This left them stranded without any money or car to get away.

Robert and Aaron eventually fled into the forest, where Rob realised he needed to trick his husband into leaving so he could hand himself in - and save Aaron from the police.

As he is taken away by the police, Aaron is held back by Patrick as he screams: "Why would he do that? We were supposed to do it together!"

His mum, Chas, simply replies: "He did it for you."

Fans were emotional about the exit, with many admitting to crying.

One person said: "Robron, they had me in tears #Emmerdale"

Another added: "Oh God I'm devastated! Poor Aaron's gonna lose the plot again! #emmerdale"

A third person praised the ending, saying: "That was 100% the right exit for Robert. The past few years have all been about developing him into a less selfish, better person.

"He made the ultimate sacrifice for Aaron and his family. Any other ending would hae made the last few yrs be in vain #Emmerdale #Robron."

Actor Ryan Hawley announced he was leaving the show earlier this year to the horror of fans, who have nicknamed his relationship with Aaron as Robron.

A source told The Sun in June: "Emmerdale fans have loved every minute of RobRon's story, and what Ryan has brought to playing Robert.

"But he has decided to take a break from the show for the foreseeable future and try other projects.

"He will leave later this year, but fans can expect to see him on screen up until the end of the year. He will be sorely missed."
