Who won Bake Off 2019?

After 30 challenging bakes, David Atherton was crowned the unexpected winner of this year's Great British Bake Off.

His victory was no surprise after the final three bakes but it certainly was a shock that David finally went from consistently being second best to actually walking away with the top prize.

In fact, David is the first person to win Bake Off without winning star baker since it was introduced in series two.

Speaking about his win, he admitted: “Honestly it was never in my mind that I thought I could win this, I have had daydreams of winning Bake Off for about 10 years.

"The judges always loved my presentation but not my flavours so to get a first in the Technical of the Final was amazing. I didn’t imagine for one micro second that I would get to the Final let alone win it. It’s just unreal."

What happened in the Great British Bake Off 2019 final?

For the final, our bakers had to ready for anything and they were certainly put through their paces with the tasks dished their way.

First up was the ultimate chocolate cake as the Signature Bake.

It needed to be a masterpiece that was creative, impressive and beautifully decorated to a professional standard.

Then it was on to the Technical Challenge - six twice baked stilton soufflés.

The Technical challenge was another beast for our bakers and poor Steph struggled to make something even resembling a double-baked Stilton souffle.

Though she persevered and carried on baking through her tears, the bookies' favourite came in last.

While Alice managed to make a decent attempt, it was David who stepped up the most and got top marks for the challenge.

For the showstopper, our bakers had to work some magic to create a deliciously deceptive feast in the form of a picnic basket and its contents.

The creation had to contain elements from cakes, enriched bread and biscuits.

Our bakers needed to display exceptional creativity and baking skills in order to make the items in the basket deceive the eyes.

Despite being a firm favourite to win the whole thing, Steph somehow managed to miss out on victory.

After being named Star Baker four times during the series, the shop assistant couldn't keep her cool on the big day and she had horror after horror.

It was sad for all to see and resulted in Steph even getting a hug from Paul Hollywood after he judged her disappointing Showstopper.

Meanwhile Alice didn't quite do enough to nab the win either.

Her decision not to use actual chocolate in the Signature didn't go down well with Paul and her choice of flavours let her down when it came to the Showstopper.

What is the Great British Bake Off final prize money?

With all the drama, sweat and tears that the dedicated bakers go through on The Great British Bake Off, you’d expect they would be aiming for some grand cash prize, but the answer is no.

The winning prize is just flowers and a cake stand, at least that's what has happened so far.

Previous Bake Off contestant Martha Collison, who reached the quarter-finals in the 2014 series, confirmed to : “Everyone is so surprised and thinks there must be some secret cash, but all we really get is a bunch of flowers and a cake stand.

“But then, you also kind of become a national treasure just by doing it because everyone in Britain loves the Bake Off so much.”
