Gillian Anderson has signed up to play Britain's first female Prime Minister opposite Olivia Colman, who has taken over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Claire Foy for seasons three and four.

Speaking on The Crown's official podcast, show runner Peter Morgan teased what fans can expect from scenes featuring the two women.

He said: "[Thatcher is a] twin. Because they’re six months apart.

"That’s very much one of those emblems, the eagle with two heads, facing in opposite directions. A lot of similarities and a lot of differences.

"They were born just six months apart. They’ve got an awful lot in common, not least their gender.

"Sometimes the things that you think will bring two people together actually drives them apart."

During her long reign, the Queen has had 14 Prime Ministers swear their allegiance to her, with Winston Churchill being her first, and Boris Johnson being the most recent.

Speaking about the dynamics between the Queen and the many different Prime Ministers, Peter said: "I've always found it useful when thinking about her relationship with those men to think of them in family terms.

"Churchill was a grandfather as a paradigm. And then Macmillan very much a father. I don't particularly count Douglas-Home.

"He was so brief and he was a family friend. But Wilson is the first, you'll understand what I mean when I say husband paradigm.

"He’s roughly the same age, or within a decade I think, and I think that also necessarily creates a very different relationship.

"And then you move through all the prime ministers and you get to someone like Blair, who would have been the first son.

"And Ed Miliband had he, there was a brief moment of course. He would have been a grandson."

Series three of The Crown is available to stream on Netflix now.
