MARVEL studios is giving comic fans the chance to see Black Widow's backstory brought to life in Scarlett Johansson's upcoming prequel flick.
But when exactly is the action-packed film set and what can viewers expect? We've got the deets below...
Is Black Widow dead?
Spoiler alert - Yes, Black Widow is dead.
As fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will know, the Avenger officially died during the epic flick Avengers: Endgame back in Spring 2019.
She sacrificed herself on Vormir in exchange for the Soul Stone as the Avengers tried to undo the damage of Thanos' fatal finger snap.
Speaking about her character's death at the time, Scarlett explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: "Honestly, it brought a closure to me that I needed, cause I was kind of wiped out after that last one [Avengers: Endgame] emotionally and literally...
"There are very few certain things but definitely, death is pretty certain. But, people definitely don't believe it and have tried to convince me that my character did not actually die.
"That may be, my character existed in an alternate universe. But no, death is a pretty final thing."
Is Black Widow set in the past?
Black Widow is focused on the time period between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.
Civil War saw Scarlett's Natasha Romanoff go on the run after defying the authorities and helping Captain America/Steve Rogers escape at the airport.
Directed by Cate Shortland, the prequel flick follows Natasha as she returns to her homeland of Russia.
What is Black Widow about?
The films sees the Avenger reunited with her "sister" Yelena and other family members after admitting she is "done running from her past".
Yelena was introduced to the Marvel comics in 1999 and she was originally a foe for Natasha.
She was trained at the Red Room – where Natasha was also trained – but the pair soon became allies.
The Red Room, also known as the Black Widow Program, was a top-secret Soviet brainwashing and training program, which took young women and turned them into elite assassins.
The trailer appears to reveal that a lot of the film will focus on this programme, as we also see young girls training together in unison in a red room.
Some fans will be quick to remember that Yelena actually becomes the second female character to take on the Black Widow codename in the comics - so this could well happen in the MCU too!
