Actor Ben Hardy who last played the role quit to go to Hollywood and has starred in a series of blockbuster movies including X-Men: Apocalypse and Bohemian Rhapsody.

He was last seen in Walford in 2015 after he left the Square unable to deal with the news his brother Bobby had been responsible for killing his sister Lucy.

Peter later reunited with love Lauren Branning for a new life in New Zealand, though it later emerged he had been struggling to cope and had turned to booze to deal with his demons.

The last viewers heard Peter was happily living with Lauren in New Zealand and it has not yet been revealed what brings him back to Walford.

Joseph Shade - 1998-2004

James Martin - 2004–2006

Prior to James taking on the role, actor Joseph Shade held the part of Peter from 1998 to 2004, with Alex Stevens playing him as a young boy for a year  between 1997 and 1998.

Dayle told The Sun Online: “I am really grateful and excited to have the opportunity to work on such an institution of British television, alongside some incredible actors.

“Peter has been away for some time so I can’t wait to find out what he’s been up to and I’m very excited to see what the future holds for him.”

Jon Sen, Executive Producer EastEnders added: “As soon as I met Dayle, I knew he’d be the one to bring Peter Beale back to Walford.

“Peter’s a young man with a big heart but a bruised soul and Dayle’s a talented actor who captures his complexity perfectly.

“I welcome him to the company and can’t wait to start working with him.”

EastEnders airs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings on BBC One.
