The ITV drama is based on the 1985 murders of June and Nevill Bamber, their adopted daughter Shelia, and their grandchildren Daniel and Nicholas, by June and Nevill's adopted son Jeremy.

In a preview of tonight's third episode, Jeremy - played by Freddie Fox - is seen greeting his friend Brett (Alfie Allen) at a train station as his girlfriend Julie (Alexa Davies) watches on.

The two men hug and compliment each other profusely, with Jeremy holding Brett by the back of the head and around the waist and saying: "You look amazing."

Despite the fact Jeremy's whole family had recently been wiped out in a shocking massacre, he appears to not have a care in the world as he laughs and jokes with his friend.

Clearly unnerved by the display, Julie heads over and introduces herself, interrupting their moment together.

After Brett greets her, he turns to Jeremy and says: "Awful business with your family, are you alright?"

Despite that being something of an understatement, Jeremy's reaction is even more chilling as he replies with a creepy grin: "Better now you're here."

Jeremy's happy display comes despite the fact his family had been shot 25 times in total at their farmhouse.

The blame originally fell on victim Sheila, who was accused of a murder-suicide, but all wasn't as it originally seemed.

Jeremy, now 59, was eventually convicted of the murders but has always maintained his innocence and insists he didn't kill his family.

The prosecution was able to persuade the jury that, after committing the murders to secure a large inheritance, Bamber had placed the gun in the hands of his 28-year-old sister Sheila Caffell, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, to make the scene appear to be a murder–suicide.

Last week, Jeremy celebrated his 59th birthday in prison with a bulging bag of letters each day from his army of supporters who also send cash to his prison bank account.

White House Farm continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
