We knew to expect Cybermen, but it looks like this time around The Doctor might not escape with the gang intact.

The BBC have released the official synopsis for the episodes – and suffice to say the stakes are high.

"The aftermath of the Great CyberWar,” the description begins.

“The Doctor and friends arrive in the far future intent on protecting the last of the human race from the deadly Cybermen.

The Ascension of the Cybermen saga will welcome a series of new guest stars, including Game of Thrones stars Ian McElhinney and Patrick O'Kane, Mutant Chronicles' Steve Toussaint and Benidorm's Julie Graham.

An exit for Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill) or Graham (Bradley Walsh) has been hotly debated over the last week.

In the latest episode, the gang all faced up to some of their darkest memories and fears for the future.

What’s more, they appeared to tie up a series of loose ends on their home turf of Sheffield – which could pave the way for a clean exit.

We learned that Yas ran away as a teen after bullying at school drove her to serious depression, but an interaction with a local police officer gave her hope and set her on the path to join her local constabulary.

In the episode’s closing moments, she returned to visit the officer, thanking them for setting her straight over a cup of tea.

Meanwhile Ryan urged his best friend to open up to his mates after he shared his struggles with anxiety and insomnia, stressing the importance of communication and honesty.

Could their exchange serve as a parting gift as Ryan heads off to face the Cybermen?

Then there’s Graham, who feared that his cancer would return, while also dealing with survivor’s guilt in the wake of late partner Grace’s death.

In fact, his conversation with the Doctor, who dismissed him, claiming she was “too socially awkward” to handle the subject matter, garnered complaints from viewers.

The BBC subsequently apologised for sweeping such sensitive material under the carpet.
