Doctor Who fans go wild as The Master makes dastardly return in scorched Gallifrey twist
DOCTOR Who’s explosive two-part finale kicked off last night, with the Doctor facing off against the dreaded Cybermen.
Jodie Whittaker, along with Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh), travelled to the distant future, where they saw Earth’s last surviving humans battling against the ruthless androids.
The gang spent most of the episode on the run from The Lone Cyberman and his minions, interspersed with flashbacks to the villain’s childhood as an Irish boy called Brendan.
In fact, many fans became convinced that Brendan is the Timeless Child, who has been mentioned throughout the series, albeit shrouded in mystery.
However, perhaps the biggest twist in the episode came when The Doctor’s long-running nemesis The Master (Sacha Dhawan) made a shock return.
The Master’s latest iteration made his series debut way back in premiere episode Skyfall, but since then has been notably absent this series.
As Jodie went to lead her crew through an unidentified portal, she was shocked to realise that it lead to her obliterated home planet of Gallifrey.
We previously discovered that Gallifrey was destroyed by The Master and surely enough he popped up again to taunt The Doctor as she grappled with the scorched landscape.
He warned: “Be afraid Doctor, because everything is about to change forever,” in the closing seconds of the episode.
While his arrival undoubtedly spells bad news, fans at home were thrilled to see the antagonist back on screens and took to social media in joy.
“HE’S BAAAAACK OMFG I’VE MISSED HIM SO MUCH,” one user gushed.
A second added: “I’m shook. I can’t live. Thank you whoever blessed us with The Master once more. I’ll gladly die for this boy.”
A third chimed in: I’m literally spiralling right now. What does this mean? What did the Master mean?! How are we meant to cope for a week not knowing?!”
While a fourth wrote: “The Master at the very end truly got me! I am so excited for next week! Bring it on!”
The furore comes after show bosses confirmed that the overarching series 13 storyline would be revealed next week.
Doctor Who concludes on BBC One on Sunday at 7:10pm and will be available to stream on iPlayer.
