Speaking on WTAF – A This Country podcast, the Cathy Matthews actress told hosts Pavo and Neil: "We were absolutely gutted when we had to stop [filming]. But it was getting weird…

“I was meant to be in filming, and I didn't feel happy about it to be honest. I was still going to go, but everyone was scared.”

"What we shot is eight weeks in the past before we even knew about this virus, so it is weird when you're watching it and no one is mentioning it. I know they're trying to keep groups of filming, when we go back, as small as possible.”

Production on both Corrie and Emmerdale stopped on 23rd March amid fears about the pandemic.

Soap stars were told not to come in for work as drastic measures were taken to stop the spread of the deadly bug.

Coronation Street  is now being shown just three times a week.

A spokesman told The Sun: “ITV has sadly taken the decision to suspend production of the soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale with effect from Monday 23 March.

"We’ve been doing our best to carry on filming, whilst adhering to the Government’s latest health guidelines, to ensure we’ve episodes of both soaps airing on ITV until at least the early summer.

"However, the health and well-being of the production teams, actors, crew and their families is of paramount importance to us and we now feel that the time has come to stop filming.”

Melanie revealed the cast and crew are in constant touch, saying: "We've just had a lovely email off the producers saying they're all working really hard. They've got great ideas.

“They've never stopped. They're editing and trying to get episodes finished, and they're going to hit the ground running, which is really heartening to hear.

"I know, because we've got WhatsApp with the cast, and they just can't wait to get back. It's horrible not seeing everyone.

"We've got a great team of writers and I'm sure they're going to come up with some great ideas. We've got enough episodes until June I think. Then we'll have to re-assess."
