The show originally aired between 1972 and 1992 and starred Barry Foster in the role.

The reboot saw Simon investigating the death of two political activists in the city, but some viewers struggled to concentrate on the action as they were too distracted by the lack of original theme tune.

Taking to Twitter, one angry viewer wrote: "@ITV How can even consider #VanDerValk without THAT theme music? #fail."

Another tweeted: "The original Van Der Valk had theme music. Was the whole point of it. #VanDerValk."

Meanwhile a third added: "Only @ITV could waste the opportunity to use one of the best pieces of theme music ever made #VanDerValk #shocking."

Sadly the reboot wasn't a hit with critics either, with them branding the show 'boring' and 'miscast'.

The Independent said: ";Even if we set aside the nostalgia factor, much of this failure must be down to a woeful casting for the lead.

"Marc Warren is a fine actor, and there’s nothing wrong with his VdV except that he just doesn’t fit."

The Radio Times gave the series two stars and wrote: "After the first episode, I just find Commissaris Piet Van Der Valk kind of irritating and charmless."

The I added: "The key ingredient, which makes characters like Bond, Luther and even Line of Duty’s Ted Hastings was missing: excitement.
“Thirty years on, the television landscape has changed dramatically. This ITV relic doesn’t stand a chance of keeping up, even with a shiny new cast.”

Van der Valk continues on Sunday, May 3 at 8pm on ITV.
