Kate's husband Derek is still fighting for his life after seven weeks in hospital - but Jo's miracle recovery has given hope.

Speaking this morning, Piers said: "These sort of stories, I have to say, give Kate great hope when she sees and hears them."

Following her recovery, Jo was given a standing ovation by locals in her village of East Meon, Hampshire.

She called it "pretty amazing" and said: "I didn't expect that reception.

"I was quite overwhelmed with the turn out."

And on beating the illness and returning home to husband Clive, she continued: "It's hard to put into words.

"I was really glad to be home. It hasn't really sunk in because I don't remember most of being in intensive care."

Clive revealed the horror of being told his wife's life was hanging in the balance.

He said: "It's a big roller coaster. There were some very, very dark moments.

"Around day 20 I was told Jo had a 50 per cent chance of making it through that night. Horrific. No one wants to hear that.

"But from there, things slowly improved. It had gone on to not only affect Jo's lungs but she had liver failure and problems with her heart too."

Dr Steve Wimbush, who was one of 100 people looking after Jo, told how her recovery was a morale boost for hospital staff.

He said: "It's an extraordinary feeling.

"To see somebody make such a recovery, it's extraordinarily morale boosting.

"I have to say watching the video of Jo arriving back in the village, it was very emotional."

Kate's husband Derek was taken into hospital on April 1, where he tested positive for Covid-19.

Two weeks later Kate revealed on her Instagram account that Derek was still in a "deeply critical condition".

She said: "From the bottom of my heart a billion thank yous to the extraordinary NHS workers whose skills, dedication and downright guts in the face of so much personal risk are keeping my Derek alive, just as they are doing for thousands of Covid patients.

"I'm afraid he is still in a deeply critical condition, but he is still here, which means there is hope."

On May 1, Kate revealed that he is still "unresponsive" to her when she speaks to him every night as he continues to battle coronavirus in intensive care.

Days later she shared an update on her Instagram account that said: "Derek is still with us, fighting so hard to beat this virus & everyday I am awestruck by how hard every member of the nhs team is fighting to turn things around & bring him ( & so many others) home to their loved ones.

"You are amazing - thank you thank you Sending love to you all in these terrible times."
