THE A Word’s Sarah Gordy has lifted the lid on the show's moving Down’s syndrome wedding scenes and her striking red dress.

The 43-year-old actress plays Katie Thorne in the BBC drama, and tonight's episode sees her marry boyfriend Ralph in emotional scenes.

Speaking to about the nuptials, Sarah said: "It’s a wonderfully positive story about two young people who both have Down’s syndrome who love and respect each other for who they are and who have decided to make a life for themselves together.

"Just like every other couple getting married."

And just like a real-life bride, Sarah was excited for her 'big day', although Katie decides against a traditional white wedding dress.

She added: "I was so excited. I love the fact that Katie didn’t want the standard long white dress. That just isn’t who she is.

"The dress is burgundy red. Being dressed so beautifully makes you confident anyway.

"It was great to film my own wedding, I got all the fun of dressing up, with none of the responsibilities."

The actress added that she "felt like royalty" as she arrived at the wedding venue in a posh car.

Sarah was awarded an MBE in 2018 and hopes the characters she portrays on screen help show that differences are a good thing.

Sarah is joined by her mother Jane on her acting jobs and the star credits her mum with boosting her confidence.

She added: "‘I have to work long and hard but it is my passion.

"Lines take longer to get in my head, but it goes deeper and becomes me."
