In her first TV appearance on GMB since Derek was admitted into intensive care, Kate, 53, told viewers how Piers had reached out to her soon after news broke.
She said: "Very early on I spoke to Piers and he said right come on Kate this is the story of your life, you've got to fight for Derek - you're a journalist, you've got to get every piece of information you can. That actually helped, I felt right this is my job.
"It was like breaking news mode when something awful happens you have to not think about the emotion of it you have to do your job. I think I rode that for weeks and weeks and weeks, I spoke to doctors, what else is out there, what else can we be doing."
During the emotional interview, Kate also revealed how Derek had begged to be put in a coma as he was "suffocating."
She added: "He couldn't really speak to me because of the mask, but he was begging me, 'I feel like I'm suffocating, please let them put me in a coma', because there was a debate about that.
"But I said 'no we've got to wait' because if his lungs can handle it that's better. Then on the Sunday morning they rang me up and said we're going to be him in a coma, and he just said to me 'I love you, I have to leave you', and I said 'it's only for three or four days and you're going to fine this is good and good.'
"He said to me 'you have saved my life, I don't just mean now I mean marrying me and the children,' and I said I love you I love you and then he was gone and that was it."
Former Labour adviser Derek, 52, was admitted to hospital on March 30th where he tested positive for Covid-19.
He was admitted to intensive care four days later.
Kate has not been on air following Derek's hospital dash after she began to display symptoms of the deadly bug.
The TV star has been supported by their famous friends throughout the difficult time, with Piers admitting last week that it "breaks his heart" to see her struggling.
Alongside a snap of Kate and her children, 14-year-old Darcey and 10-year-old Billy, he wrote: "This breaks my heart. Few happier, more positive people than @kategarraway.

"Sending all my love to Kate & continuing to root for Derek."
