Piers Morgan praises GMB co-hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard following emotional interview
PIERS Morgan has praised his Good Morning Britain co-hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard following today's emotional interview about her husband.
The 55-year-old presenter took to Twitter to laud the pair - who have worked together for years - after they discussed Derek Draper's ongoing health battle on the ITV show today.
Piers wrote: "Wow. Such a moving, emotional, inspiring interview on @GMB with my fabulous friend @kategarraway about her family’s #coronavirus turmoil. So proud of you Kate, as Derek would be too.
"We’re all behind you, hoping & praying for a miracle."
He later tweeted: "Long-time co-presenting colleagues & the closest of friends. I can’t imagine how hard that was for @benshephard to interview @kategarraway about the worst time of her life on the show they normally do together. Great job Ben (& @ranvir01 too)."
Ben, 45, became emotional after his co-star and close friend Kate had opened up on television for the first time about Derek's battle with coronavirus.
Reflecting on the heartbreaking interview, in which Kate admitted that Derek may never recover, Ben was forced to pause and compose himself.
As his eyes filled with tears, he told viewers: "We're sending so much love and prayers to Derek.
"Where there's life there's hope and no matter how bleak it might be, or how bad it is, Derek is still there and we all, absolutely..."
The GMB presenter was then forced to break off and take a deep breath, before continuing.
He then sent his prayers to Kate and Derek and their two children, Darcey, 14, and Billy, 10.
The emotional moment came an hour after Kate had appeared on Good Morning Britain via video link from her north London home.
It was the first time she had spoken in depth about Derek's battle with Covid-19, which began at the end of March.
During the heartbreaking interview, Kate recalled the last words she said to Derek before he was put in an induced coma on April 5.
The 53-year-old star said: "He couldn't really speak to me because of the mask, but he was begging me, 'I feel like I'm suffocating, please let them put me in a coma', because there was a debate about that.
"But I said 'no we've got to wait' because if his lungs can handle it that's better. Then on the Sunday morning they rang me up and said we're going to be him in a coma, and he just said to me, 'I love you, I have to leave you', and I said 'It's only for three or four days and you're going to fine this is good and good'.
"He said to me, 'You have saved my life, I don't just mean now I mean marrying me and the children,' and I said I love you I love you and then he was gone and that was it."
Meanwhile, Piers has been a huge support to Kate in recent months.
The TV host phoned Kate to offer his support soon after her husband was admitted into hospital.
She revealed today: "Very early on I spoke to Piers and he said right come on Kate this is the story of your life, you've got to fight for Derek - you're a journalist, you've got to get every piece of information you can.
"That actually helped, I felt right this is my job."
