Ben Shephard, 45, announced as the chaos unfolded: "Hold on a sec - we've been invaded. We've been invaded by the original silver fox."

A delighted Susanna Reid, 49, added: "Phillip Schofield is here, rocking the grey."

Ben told Phillip: "Hold on, I'm not sure we've got a mic on you" before asking: "You dyed it for a long time - why did you stop dying it?"

Phillip shouted across, barely audible to viewers: "I got bored - and it was expensive" before yelling "see you later" and storming out the studio.
