X-Files star Gillian Anderson throws hat in ring to become world’s first female 007
Star set Twitter alight after posting a mock-up poster of her in the titular role - and not everyone's happy
Fans of the James Bond franchise are either livid or delighted today after X-Files star Gillian Anderson started a campaign to turn her into the first female 007.
Current Bond star Daniel Craig, 48, reportedly turned down a whopping £68million deal to play the character for two more instalments, telling bosses he was ‘done’.
Since then speculation over who would replace him in the next film has hit fever pitch, with rumours spreading that the typically white male character may be changed.
Gillian, 47, yesterday retweeted a mock-up poster of her in the titular role, seemingly throwing her hat into the ring to be the first female 007 and the bold move has divided fans.
Some have praised the possibility of having Gillian on board the Bond universe, thinking that she would be an appropriate replacement for the lothario spy and reboot it to the 21st century.
Others, however, feel that the iconic character should remain as it is, and are worried that the drastic change might kill off the franchise altogether.
The New York Post entertainment critic Johnny Oleksinski wrote: ";Don’t get me wrong: The “X-Files” star is a phenomenal actress, and quite versatile.
"But she shouldn’t play James Bond. No woman should," he added.
"Bond is Bond, take him or leave him."
"The 007 series isn’t some protest or flashy congressional filibuster. There’s no social commentary here. If that’s what you want, try “Carol” or “Spotlight.”
Gillian, who was made famous playing lead character Scully in sci-fi drama The X-Files, is a new addition to an ever growing list of possibilities over who Daniel’s replacement might be.
Bookies recently stopped taking bets over the new Bond, after a surge of large sum bets hinted that Tom Hiddleston had been snapped up.
Hiddleston later laughed off the rumours, and said during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show that he was only in the running as a possibility due to his role as spy Jonathan Pine in BBC hit, The Night Manager.
He said: “The position isn’t vacant as far as I’m aware. No one has talked to me about it.”
Luther star Idris Elba was a fan favourite to become the first black Bond, but he was slated by author of the James Bond series, Anthony Horowitz, for being ‘too street’ for the suave role.
The X-Files, which initially finished in 2002, was brought back to life this year.
While the reaction was mixed, the 11th season has been confirmed by Fox, which may cause scheduling issue if Gillian becomes the Girl with the Golden Gun.
