I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel hits out at ‘periods as taboo’ in sex scenes and reveals BBC ‘let her do ANYTHING’
I MAY Destroy You star Michaela Coel has hit out at the idea that periods in sex scenes should be a taboo subject.
The writer and actress went on to admit that the BBC 'let her do anything' on the groundbreaking show.
Michaela, wrote and stars in the new BBC series which covers everything from date rape, consent, drug use, threesomes and period sex.
She plays Arabella, a writer who is sexually assaulted on a night out when her drink gets spiked.
Discussing whether at any point the broadcaster tried to rein her in, she told : "No! And, you know, periods aren’t taboo.
"How could a period be taboo? It’s like saying oxygen is taboo. No, there was no pushback."
Michaela, who previously starred in E4's Chewing Gum and BBC Black Earth Rising, went on: "Honestly, friends are like: ‘Oh, God, was it hard doing it with the BBC?’ I’m like: ‘Guys, they let me [do anything].’

BBC's drama commissioner Piers Wenger told her: “You can make this as near to the knuckle and honest and as true to your voice as you want".
The 12-part series also stars Weruche Opia, Paapa Essiedu and Aml Ameen.
