Kate Garraway is ‘crossing her fingers’ after husband Derek has ‘stable day’ as she thanks Ben Shephard for GMB support
KATE Garraway has revealed that she is crossing her fingers after husband Derek Draper had a "stable day" in intensive care.
The 53-year-old star returned to work on Good Morning Britain earlier today after more than three months away amid Derek's coronavirus battle.
The TV presenter thanked her GMB co-star Ben Shephard for supporting her, as well as viewers at home for their "patience" and "kind messages".
Taking to Instagram this evening, the mother-of-two shared a behind-the-scenes photo of herself and Ben in the studio.
Ben has taken the selfie, and the pair are grinning at the camera as they keep a safe social distance behind the GMB desk.
Kate hinted that she was nervous about returning to our screens, writing: "Well I survived my 1st day back without crashing the show thanks to the brilliant @benshephardofficial , the whole wonderful @gmb team & all of YOUR patience!!
"Thanks so much for your incredibly kind messages. Means such a lot . Derek had a stable day too so 🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏. See you at 6 a.m tomorrow xxx"
Although he has started to open his eyes, Derek remains in and out of consciousness.
He first emerged from his coma after 98 days, but only has "minimum consciousness".
Kate, who shares 14-year-old Darcey and 10-year-old Billy with Derek, revealed earlier today that her GMB comeback was rocky after her driver failed to turn up, her computer went into a two-hour update, and the show's autocue operator slept in.
She also warned she was likely to get "emotional" if her colleagues were "too nice" about her comeback.
Welcoming her back, co-host Ben kicked off the show saying: "I've got a big smile on my face because she's back. It's lovely to see you because nothing's gone wrong yet."
Since March, the presenter has been supporting her sick husband Derek throughout his devastating coronavirus battle.
Despite her tragic circumstances, Kate is trying to "look to the future" and get some normality back in her family's lives.
While on the show, Kate's eyes filled with tears while talking to coronavirus survivor Michael Rosen.
The children's book writer described his recovery after 47 days in a coma.
Kate said: "It's stories like yours that give everybody hope, so thank you very much indeed."

Her co-host agreed: "It's hugely important. Kate, as you've said to me in the past about recovery, where there's life there's hope.
"That has been a long journey for Michael and it's continuing."

In March, Kate was left devastated when 52-year-old Derek was rushed to hospital suffering from coronavirus.
He begged to be put into a coma because he felt he was "suffocating", and the star has bravely updated fans on his fight ever since.
