Kate Garraway left ‘terrified’ and ‘shaken’ after tyre explodes on motorway in first family outing without husband Derek
KATE Garraway was left "terrified" and "shaken" after her tyre exploded on the motorway during her first family outing without husband Derek Draper.
While Derek remains in intensive care, having been hospitalised in March with coronavirus, the 53-year-old star took their children away over the weekend.
Kate was forced to call the police when emergency car rescue left them stranded on the motorway with no hard shoulder for over an hour - and thanked them for their help on Instagram today.
Sharing a socially distanced photo of herself with the officers in a car park, teamed with one of the damaged tyre, Kate explained to fans what had happened.
The star also promised to reveal more detail when she returns to work on Good Morning Britain tomorrow.
She wrote: "Thanks to our amazing saviours Liz & Mark from @kentpoliceuk who rescued me after a full tyre blow out on the motorway!!!
"Never had one before - utterly terrifying. Managed to keep control of car but couldn’t get off motorway as no hard shoulder & when the AA said they couldn’t come for an hour, then rang after half an hour to say might still be an hour had no choice but to call the police.
"They were so brilliant and got us to safety and we are now on way home in taxi , shaken but safe , tow truck on way to car.
"It’s first time have taken kids out without Derek too , but we are safe and will update you fully on @gmb with @benshephardofficial tomorrow from 6 a.m".
Kate shares 14-year-old daughter Darcey and 11-year-old son Billy with Derek, and has been battling to provide them with a sense of normality while their dad fights for his life in hospital.

Her celebrity friends have also been doing their bit to help, with Myleene Klass organising a fun birthday surprise for Billy earlier this month - and Kate's I'm A Celeb campmate Roman Kemp even dropping by as an extra treat.
Derek was rushed to hospital at the end of March as he suffered breathing difficulties due to coronavirus.
In intensive care, he was put into a coma - which he only woke from at the start of this month.
Despite promising progress, Derek still has "minimum consciousness", but last week there was a positive update as Kate emotionally revealed the moment her sick husband Derek looked "focused and engaged" as nurses put on Good Morning Britain for him to watch from his hospital bed.
