The actress, 35, revealed her family's brush with deadly Covid-19 happened when they enjoyed a night at the theatre before lockdown.

Gemma appeared on new Channel 4 show Steph's Packed Lunch today and said: “I had the antibodies test back in March.

"Six of us went to the theatre on a Sunday, all became ill on the Wednesday and we all got different symptoms.

“The only thing we had in common was we all lost our sense of smell and taste. My stepdad, Peter, was really poorly, he was in bed for two weeks. "

"We had the antibodies test then and it came back that we had the antibodies… I don’t know how long you have them for.

"We did it because until we lost our taste and smell, I thought it was just a bit of flu.”

Gemma also told former BBC presenter Steph McGovern about the strict testing Gorka is having while training for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Gemma said: “They’re doing tests all the time. They’re doing the bubbling and then he gets two weeks off but again he has to isolate. Then they’re doing more tests before they go back.”

He grumbled about missing out, but said it gave him more time with partner Gemma Atkinson, 35, and baby daughter Mia.

Towns and cities across the UK are battling a surge in cases of Covid-19 and a lack of capacity has meant many Brits are unable to access tests locally when they develop symptoms.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, Sir John, who has been overseeing the Government's antibody test programme and advising ministers said the “speed of the second wave had been underestimated”.

However, the flu is still killing killing ten times more people in England than Covid-19, new figures show.
