Great British Bake Off’s Sura breaks down in tears after knocking rival’s cake on floor

THE Great British Bake Off rises again in dramatic fashion tonight as a contestant knocks a rival's cake onto the floor.

Pharmacy worker Sura, 31, breaks down in tears after her kitchen catastrophe.

The first mini-challenge given to the 12 contestants on tonight's first episode is to bake six mini-cakes.

As Londoner Sura takes her completed cakes to the judging table she is pestered by a fly that she swats away saying, “Go away, ugh.”

But in doing so she collides with fellow baker, security guard Dave, 30, from Hampshire, sending his sweet treat toppling.

“I’m so sorry. Oh my god. I’m so sorry there was a fly, I went to shoo it away and I knocked it,” she cries.

Sura then bursts into tears while hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas rush over to help.

Two more mishaps happen later in the Channel 4 cooking show, one involving Sura again as her showstopper cake topples and project manager Mark Lutton drops a sponge.

A TV source told the Mirror: “In terms of incident and controversy it is right up there with anything that has happened on the show before. Whilst it is clear what Sura did was not deliberate, the series could not start in much more dramatic fashion.”

Sura took up baking in her 20s and confessed judge Prue Leith was a huge inspiration.

"I was looking forward to meeting Prue the most. I have watched her for many years on TV and I just loved her passion for food and flavours and her immense knowledge on it all," she said.

"She inspired a lot of my baking in my early 20s."

The Sun revealed the 11 competitors entered the famous tent back in July, where they cooked for judges Paul Hollywood, 54, and Prue, 80, in a brand new location in Essex.

The show charged ahead despite fears it wouldn't return until 2021 owing to the coronavirus lockdown, as it wasn't included in Channel 4's autumn TV highlights.

However it was finally announced last week that Bake Off 2020 will kick off at 8pm on Tuesday September 22nd.
