Trendy London festival Field Day sees electronic music legends Air steal the limelight from headliner PJ Harvey with rare UK appearance

SUPER-cool festival Field Day marked its tenth year this weekend – drawing Britain’s trendiest bands and punters to help them celebrate the milestone at east London’s Victoria Park.

Pop-rockers Get Inuit offered a gentle start to Sunday afternoon with an intimate set at the booze-sponsored Jagerhaus stage, with glasses of the powerful spirit helping get the crowd swaying to hits including Pro Procrastinator.

But there was less family-friendly fare the Shacklewell Arms tent, where druggie rockers Fat White Family tore into a furious set in front of a sweaty and adoring crowd.

Early in the set frontman Lias Saoudi hurled himself into the audience – only for his boxers to split in half as he clambered back onto the stage.

He was left to scream blistering tracks including Whitest Boy On The Beach while clad in just a set of unflattering blue underwear.

Elsewhere The Temper Trap had the Return of the Rural tent packed to the rafters for their later afternoon performance, leading a mass singalong with set-closer Sweet Disposition.

And dance duo Psychemagik served up a punchy slice of psychedelic disco to a surprisingly small audience at the Snap Crackle and Pop stage.

On the main stage, indie pop darling PJ Harvey had the day’s biggest audience dancing and singing along to her hits, accompanying herself on the saxophone as she played nearly all of new album The Hope Six Demolition Project.

But it was French electronic duo Air who delivered the day’s best performance with one of their very few UK dates this year.

In a sparkling set crammed with classics from their 1998 album Moon Safari, as well as their soundtrack to Hollywood hit The Virgin Suicides, they had the audience rapt for the entire hour.

From Remember and Sexy Boy, as well as later work Cherry Blossom Girl, they had the audience in the palm of their hands by closer Kelly Watch The Stars, before an encore consisting of a upbeat remix of La Femme D’Argent.

Oddly, despite the crowd’s cheers the band hardly spoke a word throughout their set – apart from the single word “thanks” at the end.
But with such an impressive back catalogue of hits, it’s easy to let the music do the talking.
