KATE Garraway explains she missed Good Morning Britain because she and the kids were exposed to Covid - while husband Derek Draper is in intensive care.

The presenter, 53, was missing from the ITV morning show for a few weeks after her family suffered a coronavirus scare.

Luckily, Kate and kids Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, all tested negative and the star returned to the show on Thursday morning to tell viewers.

She said: "It's lovely to be back, I'm sorry I've been absent for a couple of weeks now.

"Well, a few challenges kicking off, challenges with Derek as there always are.

"So we had outside of Derek a little bit of a scare. In the sense that, we found out the children had come into contact with somebody who after they came into contact with them, tested positive for coronavirus - isn't seriously ill.

"It's happening a lot because of schools, so just to be ultra, ultra, ultra cautious, kept them at home, kept me at home until we got negative tests.

"We got two negative tests actually, because you know me, more is more. So all three of us had negative tests, mercifully."

However, this was added stress for Kate as her husband - and father to the kids - Derek is still in intensive care following his coronavirus infection in March.

She continued: "I did think, 'oh my goodness, this is going to be very difficult, obviously horrific if any of us get sick'. And I've had it. I had it when Derek got sick."

Former political lobbyist Derek, 53, was placed in an induced coma after being admitted to hospital, and Kate has spoken frequently about how much she and their children Darcey and Billy miss him.

In November, Kate told co-host Ben Shephard that she feels "physically sick" about the prospect of Christmas without Derek.

She said: "I feel physically sick actually. I can feel my chest tightening at the thought of it, and the total panic at Darcy, Bill and myself on our own at Christmas unable to visit Derek because of restrictions, and that huge emotional hole.

"I don't know how to fill it, without friends and grandparents to fill it. It feels like such a significant moment."
