Deafy, Baldy & Lazy

Disney’s lost dwarfs revealed for first time as sketches from 1937 film are sold

Walt Disney himself decided on the final line-up of dwarfs... but a lot of dubious names were put forward to start with

MEET Deafy – the dwarf who didn’t quite make Snow White’s final seven.

He and his less-than-PC pals Tubby, Baldy and Shorty were among a bunch of characters ditched from the 1937 Disney animation before the final cut.

Yesterday the world finally got to see the mini rejects, thanks to an auction of 400 original drawings from the cartoon, which raised £500,000 at Bonhams in New York.

During the making of Snow White, Walt Disney personally decided on the final line-up of dwarfs, including Doc, Grumpy, Sleepy, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey – but plenty of other names were considered earlier in the process.

Fierce selection process ... Walt Disney himself decided whether the likes of Baldy, Grumpy and Doc would make the final cut

Dr Catherine Williamson, of Bonhams, said: “I think the guys at Disney will be relieved that the names of the dwarfs were changed at the last minute.

"I’m sure they wouldn’t have offended sensibilities back in the 1930s – but it would be a different story today.”
