Prince’s shirt from movie Purple Rain sells big at auction for almost £75,000

Iconic white ruffled shirt sold for 32 times the original asking price

THE iconic white ruffled shirt worn by late superstar Prince in movie Purple Rain has sold at auction for a staggering $96,000 (£72,300).

The final price tag was more than 32 times the original asking price, with the seller setting an asking price of a measly £3,800.

Prince wore the shirt alongside a multitude of lavish blazers in the 1984 cult classic, where he took the lead role as The Kid, as well as recording the soundtrack.

The shirt was just one item in a host of iconic pieces of Prince memorabilia put up at Profiles in History auction house in California.

Knee-high boots from Prince’s 1988 LoveSexy tour sold for £13,500, a necklace from his music video for Diamonds and Pearls sold for £6,300, and a black and white blazer, also worn by Prince in Purple Rain, also went for another £72,300.

Prince passed away at the age of 57 after an accidental overdose back in April at his Minnesota home, Paisley Park.

Both the blazer and shirt sold for over £72,000 each

Auction house founder Joe Maddelena has said that the blazer was already arranged for auction before the star’s sudden death.

Prince’s make-up artist was reportedly gifted the jacket by Prince following the production of the movie.

Mr Maddalena said: “It just happened to be one of those coincidences that unfortunately he passed away.

“Probably the signature thing he is known for is Purple Rain. It’s what made his career. It’s probably what he’ll be remembered for always.”

The treasured items went to an anonymous bidder.
