“They have been a pleasure to work with and we wish them all the best for the future."

The Cokers, who run a funeral parlour and flower stall, arrived on the Square in 2014 when they took care of Pam Evans’ funeral.

Since then they have been involved in some high-profile storylines including the death of their son, debt problems, an extra-marital affair and cross-dressing.

But their most recent storyline saw the arrival of their grandson in Walford, who then had a relationship with Phil Mitchell’s son Ben.

Last week, Paul died from his injuries after he and Ben were the victims of a homophobic attack.

And while the characters have proved popular, new EastEnders producer Sean O'Connor reportedly feels that future plotlines have been exhausted.

He is believed to be planning their exit which will be tied to Les's cross-dressing secret life as his alter-ego Christine.

A source told the Mirror: "Pam and Les have been a big part of the show over the past few months and with their current storyline, bosses felt that it was the right time for their characters to leave the Square.

"There is still plenty more drama to come from the Cokers before they leave Walford."

The Sun Online has contacted the BBC for comment.
