Everything you need to know about Bridget Jones’ Baby

Renée Zellweger is reprising her role as our favourite singleton

IT'S been 12 long years since the last instalment of Bridget Jones’ ever-dramatic life hit cinemas – and now she’s finally back for more messy mishaps.

Bridget Jones Baby is set to be another box office hit, after director Sharon Maguire and writers Helen Fielding, David Nicholls and Emma Thompson were invited to work their magic on the film.

Some of our favourite actors are back too, including Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth.

But it’s been a long time coming. Speaking in 2013, Firth – who plays Mark Darcy – stressed the lengthy process of putting the new movie together.

“I wouldn’t say that it’s completely dead in the water, but the way it’s going you might be seeing Bridget Jones’ granddaughter’s story being told by the time we get there,” he told The Chicago Sun Times.

Luckily they got there in the end and the much-anticipated movie will hit cinemas next month.

It looks like it’ll be worth the wait, too.

Here, we reveal what you can expect from Bridge this time round…

It’s nothing like the book

While the previous films have been loosely based on Fielding’s novels, the new film has strayed from the third book, Mad About The Boy’s plot.

Luckily for us, Mark Darcy doesn’t die – but is still very firmly a part of Bridget’s life, even if they’re not strictly together.

Instead, the film is based on columns Fielding wrote for The Independent between 2005 and 2006 and is reportedly set before the final instalment.

Does this mean there could be a fourth film?

Hugh Grant is nowhere to be seen

It seems the script was heavily edited when Grant – who played love rat Daniel Cleaver in the previous films – chose not to take part.

In 2014, he said, “I decided not to do it. But I think they’re going to go ahead and do it without Daniel. The book’s excellent, by the way, but the script is completely different – well, the script as I last saw it a few years ago.”

Bridget is ‘mit bebe’!

As the title suggests, our beloved Bridget is pregnant - for definite this time.

But the trouble is, she doesn’t know who the dad is.

Five years after splitting up with her ex-hubby (and her favourite reindeer jumper), the former couple get cosy after a few too many bubbles at a pal’s christening - but Bridge has also been enjoying a few dates with Jack Qwant (played by Patrick Dempsey) too.

So when she discovers she’s expecting, she’s got a tough job working out who’s responsible.

…but even the cast are in the dark about the ending

They filmed three different endings, so even Renée doesn’t know who the dad of Bridget’s baby is.

Speaking to the Sunday Express, she explained, “It’s kind of brilliant. None of the cast knows who fathered Bridget’s baby or who she’ll choose as her beau. The plan is to keep us all in the dark, right up to the premiere.”

She's in demand

Darcy and Qwant aren’t shying away from their fatherly duties.

Instead, the trailer for the film shows just how committed they both are to Bridget.

The pair appear to spend their days chasing after her, both accompanying her to antenatal classes, doctor appointments and of course, the big event itself.

We even spied Mr Darcy carrying Bridge and exclaiming, “Good God Bridget, you’re immense!”

There are a few familiar faces

All our favourite characters are back, including her best friends Shazza (played by Sally Phillips), Tom (played by James Callis) and Jude (Shirley Henderson).

But some of our favourite actors are joining the cast this time around, including Emma Thompson, who plays Bridget’s hilarious midwife and also played a part in writing the film, and Ed Sheeran, who is making a much-anticipated cameo.

Bridget Jones’ Baby hits UK cinemas on September 16
