Will Young confirmed for Strictly Come Dancing
The Pop Idol winner is the second star to be announced for the glittering dance competition
WILL Young is foxtrotting his way onto Strictly Come Dancing this year, telling fans: “I have always imagined myself on the show.”
The 37-year-old Pop Idol winner has been rumoured to be joining the BBC show for a month and today the news comes after he teased fans this morning by tweeting, “Today is going to be an exciting day…”
And Will clearly can’t wait to get his dancing shows on, he said:
“As a fan of Strictly for years, I have always imagined myself on the show, but the timing has not been right… until now!
“Music is my passion and the dancing I have done has always been with a microphone in hand.
“Now there will be no microphone or band, just me, my partner and the dance floor.
“Strictly is a show with fantastic live music and has an ethos of positivity and growth. I practice these two things every day, and I will try my hardest to be the best dancer possible.”
Show insiders had previously told The Sun that the singer would be “brilliant” for Strictly.
“Will is a brilliant signing for us. He is extremely popular, a true professional,” said a show source.
“He can be quite competitive and he is no shrinking violet.”
His slot on Strictly has the potential to make Will the comeback king after battling an array of troubles, including mental illness, addiction and being dropped by his label last week.
But despite Will’s rocky journey, he has always been hailed as an inspiration due to him being one of the first openly gay pop stars.
The 2002 Pop Idol winner will be joining former Labour Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls, who was the first name confirmed for Strictly yesterday.
Ed said: “I’d like to say I’m just really excited about learning to dance on TV, but the truth is I’m also scared to death.
“Making a speech in Parliament seems a piece of cake compared to this, but hopefully I can stick around for a couple of weeks, and have a lot of fun in the process.”
Other names rumoured to be competing for the Glitter Ball trophy include ex-Eternal singer and WAG Louise Renknapp, pop star Anastacia, TV’s Judge Rinder and presenter Laura Whitmore.
