In fact his audition for the ITV variety show came when he was at his lowest ebb.
He revealed: "It was definitely a strange period of my life.
"I had just transferred schools for sixth form, I had a scholarship for music at a private school but it wasn’t for me in the end as it turned out, and I had a tough time dealing with it.
"For me it was particularly weird because I felt what did I have to lose, if I’m already at the very bottom where am I going to go?
"Sometimes it can be totally down to you to try things and get out of your comfort zone and break those boundaries that you set yourself.
"It was remarkable for me, the reaction from people I never could have ever expected that."
