Who is Rav Bansal? Meet the new 2016 Great British Bake Off contestant

UNIVERSITY support worker Rav Bansal comes from a very large and close knit family.

His passion for unusual flavour combinations is what landed him his place in this year's Great British Bake Off tent - but what else do we know about him?

Rav is 28 years old and lives in Kent, he was raised in what he calls a traditional Sikh family who he praises as being pivotal in shaping his passion for cooking.

He is also the show's first ever Vegan baker, he says that in 2014 he took part in a two week vegan challenge, which went on to last 6 months.

Although he is not a vegan now, he says his diet is predominantly plant based.

Rav initially studied criminology at university, but has gone on to pursue a career working as student support staff, he has also volunteered for charities such as Victim Support.

On his website Rav talks about the unusual flavours he likes to blend in his recipes, he says growing up in  Punjabi household has inspired bakes such as Chai Spiced Victoria Sponge and Chilli Paneer Quiche.

Fans of the show can follow Rav on his twitter page, the baker is quite the traveller - having recently visited Rome and Marrakesh.
