The new series started with the beloved Mary Berry getting excited over the inclusion of a gin drizzle cake - but all was not as expected

THE GREAT British Bake Off returned for the latest series on Wednesday night - and even Vicky Pattison is falling in love with the star of the show, Mary Berry.

Viewers were left in fits of giggles when Mary's eyes noticeably lit up when new contestant Tom announced he will be starting the show making a gin and tonic drizzle cake.

Vicky, who isn't shy or having a drink or two, took to Twitter and wrote: "I knew Mary Berry was my spirit animal... You see her eyes light up when that geezer said he's popping gin in his drizzle?!"

She wasn't alone in her thoughts, as another viewer wrote: "Where can I get me a Gin and Tonic drizzle cake????? Need one of those in my life"

A third added: "Mary Berry loves the idea of any baked good flavored with seven shots of Gin&Tonic."

Other viewers of the show were quick to jump in on the fun, with even the official page making a comment on Mary's delight at the sound of the bake.

However, the plan backfired as Tom put too much gin in the sponge and left the judges recoiling at the strength.

This displeased fans, who said: "Can there be too much gin in a cake? What is too much gin? I'm confused by this"

Despite his faux pas, Tom managed to please Mary and co-host Paul Hollywood with his Jaffa Cake and showstopper during cake week, and secured himself a place in next week's show.

Unfortunately, church pastor Lee Banfield, 67, being the first to face the chop after failing to impress and messing up his lemon drizzle.

After leaving, he told The Sun: “My wife Dorothy encouraged me to apply, we have been married for 47 years so I do take her advice and I submitted the application form never thinking I would hear back and was then delighted to be accepted for the new series.

“I count it as a privilege to have actually got on the show."
He has however, vowed to never make another Jaffa Cake.
