What has Laverne Cox said about her dating struggles?

Cox has opened up about the struggles of dating as a transgender woman.

"The issue over the years for me as a trans woman and other trans women is that the womanhood of trans women is often disavowed," she said during her January 2021 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, per People.

"A lot of people don't see trans women as women. So, the men that are attracted to women, people think they are gay. And if you are a straight man, you don't want people to think you're gay. So a lot of the times they don't want to disclose or want to let anyone know."

During the November 16, 2022 episode of E!'s , Cox spoke with Angelica Ross, a fellow transgender woman and actress, about the hardships they have experienced with dating.

Per , Cox told the story of the time a man questioned her gender identity while on a walk in the park with a friend.

"My friend says, 'F you,' and he had one of those folding chairs and he goes after my friend. My friend's instinct was to get in between me and the person so that the guy wouldn't come after me," she said.

Cox said the fight was "over as fast as it started," but the reasoning behind it is what surprised her the most, per the outlet.

"He was checking things out, wasn't sure if it was okay for him to be attracted to me, in his mind. And so, that's why he needed to confirm guy or girl," she continued.

Cox and Ross also spoke about the issues trans women encounter with online dating specifically.

"They get upset that they've matched with us instead of just being like, 'Oh, I'm not interested. Un-match,'" Cox said.

"They flag our profiles, and then so many men flag our profiles, and our accounts are deleted. And they're like, 'You're doing something crazy,' and it's just, 'No. I'm just being trans on a dating app.'"
