THE WAY THE BOOKIES CRUMBLE

Lisa Faulkner favourite to replace Mel and Sue on Great British Bake Off

LISA Faulkner is the favourite to present the new series of The Great British Bake Off when it moves to Channel 4.

The former Celebrity MasterChef winner could be set to front the hit baking show after Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc sensationally quit last night.

SunBets have tipped Faulkner as the 3-1 favourite.

Last year's Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain is the second favourite, ahead of C4 regulars Kirstie Allsop and Phil Spencer.

Another possibility is John Torode, Lisa's partner and current MasterChef presenter.

Fans went into meltdown after Love Productions announced it was taking Bake Off to C4, with many threatening to boycott the show after Mel and Sue stepped down.

The pair have fronted the baking contest since it began on BBC Two in 2010, alongside judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, but have decided not to follow the hit-show to  Channel 4.

They said in a statement: "We made no secret of our desire for the show to remain where it was... we're not going with the dough."

Love Productions, which makes the show, thanked them for "bringing their unique humour to the tent".

Their statement continued: "The BBC nurtured the show from its infancy and helped give it its distinctive warmth and charm, growing it from an audience of two million to nearly 15 [million] at its peak.

"We've had the most amazing time on Bake Off, and have loved seeing it rise and rise like a pair of yeasted Latvian baps.

"We're not going with the dough. We wish all the future bakers every success."

The BBC is understood to have offered £15million per series – doubling its previous offer – to keep the show, but refused to stump up the £25million a year show creators Love Productions demanded.

Judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry have remained tight-lipped so far about their future on the show, but Berry’s husband Paul Hunnings told the "She’s very happy with the BBC, put it that way."

He added that what her Bake Off colleagues did "would be factor" in her decision.
