They announced the horrible news that their baby, who was battling a rare form of leukaemia, had passed away in April last year.

Now it has emerged that Ashley Cain, a former footballer who starred on Ex On The Beach, and Safiyya Vorajee have ended their relationship as the painful anniversary of Azaylia's death approaches on April 25.

A source told The Sun: "No one knows how something so tragic can affect a couple, and it's been incredibly painful for them to make this decision.

"They will always love and support each other, and still live together, but the romantic side of their relationship has come to an end.";

Confirming The Sun's story, Ashley and Safiyya released a joint statement.

It said: "After a devastating and heartbreaking year, Safiyya and I decided to separate a few months ago.

"This was an incredibly tough decision which we needed to keep to ourselves for some time to give us the opportunity to figure out our own journey privately.

"The past few months have demonstrated that we remain the closest of friends, spending time together everyday and that we will love, care and support each other forever.

"We are bonded by our powerful journey together, by the eternal love we have for our daughter and our passionate commitment to her foundation."

They had not been seen together on social media since Safiyya shared a picture of them at Good Morning Britain in August last year.

The former couple appeared on the show four months after Azaylia's heartbreaking death.

They revealed the terrible news on Instagram, where they had kept fans updated with the tot's battle against the cruel disease.

Safiyya wrote at the time: "You are my Angel my heartbeat my soul, RIP my precious baby, you will always be with me like a handprint on my heart."

Ashley posted: "Rest in paradise princess. I will always hold you in my heart until I can hold you again in heaven."

They founded the , which supports families fundraising for treatments not readily available on the NHS, and provides children with memorable experiences as they fight cancer.

Ashley also increasingly threw himself into exercise and sport after the tragedy and the boxer recently announced he would fight eight times - one for each month of Azaylia's life.

He said: "It was important for me to take on this boxing challenge because my daughter fought a heroic battle against cancer on this earth for eight months.

"So I want to honour those eight months with eight bouts in the ring.

"I promised that even now I will always be the best daddy I can be, I will honour her incredible time here and I will fight till the day I die for other children and their families who face the monster that is cancer."
