Seasoning it with pepper and brown sauce, he ate the placenta with some beans on toast.

Speaking to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about his unusual decision to eat it, Ross admitted it started off as a "joke" but he decided to go through with it.

Eating the placenta is popular with celebrities, including Kourtney Kardashian and January Jones with many making it much more palatable by having it made into pills

Ross said the doctors and many of his pals were disgusted at the thoughts of him chowing down on the organ.

He said: “The doctors and the midwives were quite rightly disgusted by it, they joked about it in theatre and they gave it to us in a bag and told me to enjoy my breakfast.

“My family and friends thought it was disgusting but it’s not a new thing, it’s just mostly women but Heather wasn’t interested in it so I thought why not?”

His Facebook video of him eating the placenta with his breakfast has gone viral and Ross admits he fried some of it and ate another bit raw.

Holly, who is a mum-of-three tentatively asked what it tasted like and he replied: “It didn’t really taste of much, it was very  juicy once it was cooked, it was quite salty and it was similar to liver but more of a rough texture….like a bad cut of pork.

“I had a few bites and then ate my normal breakfast.”

However, she also confessed that she wished she’d kept a little bit in the placenta so she could try it in future.

Dr Ranj did explain to viewers to be careful if they were thinking of eating the placenta as well.

He advised: "There is a risk involved there as it is organic human material and you could make yourself sick. Make sure there are not problems with the placenta because essentially it takes out waste from the body of the baby."
