GMB’s Piers Morgan told to ‘GET A GRIP’ by fans furious he quizzed PM Theresa May about shoes and scones
The breakfast show frontman was blasted by viewers for apparently failing to get down to the nitty gritty and branding the PM a 'firecracker'
GOOD Morning Britain fans blasted lead host Piers Morgan as 'SEXIST' for quizzing Prime Minister Theresa May about her snazzy shoe collection - before slamming him for steering away from serious issues as he delved into her age-old recipe for SCONES.
The gobby host and co-presenter Susanna Reid initially grilled the Conservative about the impact of the Brexit vote on trade and a time-scale for political changes to come into place.
Yet talk quickly turned to the PM's wardrobe and her passion for whipping up sweet cake treats from her granny's recipe and sparked a frenzy of frustration from viewers taking to Twitter to comment.
Londoner Piers was eager to know the secret ingredient in her scones and asked: "I know you're a big fan of The Great British Bake Off - is it better to have the butter hard or soft?"
Eager to lift the lid on her technique, the PM said: "It's easier if it's hard - if it's too soft it starts to become claggy.
"I've made it in the past with butter but now because of my diabetes I don't make too many scones."
Talk had previously switched from the kitchen to her wardrobe and her snazzy fashion sense when it comes to shoes.
She told the show: "It's interesting people focus on my shoes - I don't think they focus on Phillip Hammond or Boris Johnson's shoes in the same way.
"It gives me an excuse to go and buy new shoes.
"I've got as good pair on today - but you might not be able to see them."
Yet the softer approach to the interview had fans branding the breakfast show a "shambles" and urging them to "get a grip."
One wrote: "You're talking to the prime minister, I'm sure there are more important questions then shoes and bloody butter! Get a grip!"
Another added: "Hard-hitting interview with Theresa May on - butter or margarine in scones? Thanks for asking the questions the people want to know," before quipping: "Next time please prioritise the following questions: Ant or Dec? Dick or Dom? Columbo or Murder She Wrote?."
Another summed up: "Theresa May has been on GMB this morning talking how to bake scones with Piers Morgan. So, so British," while one made the snide remark: "Oh wow, and then go on to ask about her cooking. Your show is a shambles. She's the prime minister not yer mam. Ask real questions."
One was more direct and posted: "Stupid questions to Theresa May which she answered well considering the idiocy of them."
Another seemed confused about the direction of questioning and wrote: "@GMB asks T May if it's sexist to focus on her shoes as she's a woman and then they ask her a question about baking and scones..."
Others went as far as to accuse Piers of being sexist and one posted: "Patronising /talking over/ being sexist about Theresa May on @GMB... "Girl power", shoes, & "a little firecracker..."
Another even donned the hashtag #sconegate
After their chat Piers quipped: "Theresa May wears these shoes so we talk about them
"It's so she can say 'you may think I'm borning, look at these shoes'.
"I'm a little firecracker."
Bubbly brunette Susanna disagreed and said: "You think the things people wear are about making a statement.
"She's not making a statement other than I like these shoes."
