JAMES Arthur made a triumphant return to the stage he found fame on during tonight's X Factor- only to mess up the lyrics to his number one song.

Hardcore fans noticed the gaff when the star performed his song Say You Won't Let Go - a song Simon proudly announced was the 41st single created from an artist who started life on the show.

At 1 minute 20 seconds in the performance, James unfortunately forgets the first line to the second verse.

Instead, the singer repeats: "I'll bring you coffee with a kiss on your head."

Before the coffee line, James should have sung: "I wake you up with some breakfast in bed."

Those who noticed the minor error took to Twitter to make sure that they had heard the song correctly and to let people know of the mistake.

One wrote: "So, James Arthur just sang the wrong lyrics TO HIS OWN SONG on The X Factor... #awkward #TheXfactor"

Another added they had listeed to the song so much that they couldn't help but notice, and said: "Anyone else notice James Arthur sang the wrong lyrics on xfactor clearly I've listened to the song too many times"

A similar fan added: "James Arthur just got his own lyrics wrong. From someone who has listened to that song 5367853 times #XFactor"

James later wrote on Twitter: "That was the most nerve wracking thing I've ever done so apologies for the pitchyness and incorrect lyrics, but thank you so much everyone."

After his performance, the singer started trending on Twitter - and he dedicated the performance to his dad as it was his 60th birthday.

The star also used the platform to raise awareness for Mental Health Day which is taking place tomorrow across the UK.

On tonight's show, colourful duo Bratavio became the first to be eliminated from the show after their 'Express Yourself' themed mash up of Aqua's Barbie Girl and Boom Boom Boom by The Vengaboys failed to impress voters.

In an unexpected turn of events, they were up against songstress Saara Aalto in the sing-off, who received high praise during the first show for her performance of Let It Go from the musical Frozen.

They bowed up performing the 90s classic The Only Way is Up and thanked judge Louis for taking them to that point.

Catch The X Factor, Saturday and Sunday on ITV1.
