But who is in the cast and what's it all about? Here is all the info as the fifth and final series draws to a close...
What is Ripper Street about?
The first series is set in April 1889, six months since the last Jack the Ripper killing, and in Whitechapel H Division is responsible for policing one and a quarter square miles of East London.
The men of H Division had hunted the Ripper and failed to find him.
When more women are murdered on the streets of Whitechapel, the police begin to wonder if the killer has returned.
Who is part of the cast of Ripper Street?
Matthew MacFadyen (Detective Inspector Reid)
Pride and Prejudice actor Matthew MacFadyen plays the main character Detective Inspector Reid.
This isn't the first time Matthew has played someone part of the law enforcement officer - from 2002 to 2011 he played spy Tom Quinn.
As the the commander of the East London H Division, Reid is a workaholic driven by his failure to capture Jack the Ripper and the presumed death of Mathilda, his daughter.
Jerome Flynn (Detective Inspector Bennet Drake)
Game of Thrones star Jerome Flynn plays Detective Inspector Bennet Drake in the series.
Drake has been Reid's right-hand man since the beginning and has undergone a number of personal revolutions, which has included promotions within the police force.
He returned for the fifth series.
Adam Rothenberg (Captain Homer Jackson)
Adam Rothenberg plays main character Captain Homer Jackson and returned for series five.
The former US Army surgeon is Reid and Drake's forensic expert who came to London following the Haymarket Riot.
His security became threatened in series one after Reid and Constantine discovered his true identity.
MyAnna Buring (Brothel owner Hart)
Downton Abbey star MyAnna Buring plays brothel owner Hart in the series.
Brothel owner Hart finds herself tangled up with Reid, Drake and Jackson during their many cases.
Speaking to The Sun about her character in 2013, she said: "Susan also isn’t what you presume at first glance. She is a brothel madam, but actually she is very far from corrupt. She has a strong moral compass."
David Wilmot (Sgt. Donald Atherton)
David Wilmot plays Sgt. Donald Atherton in Ripper Street.
He is the H-Division's desk sergeant and was a recurring character in the first three series of the show.
At the end of series four he was seen again at home with his children and Drake.
Charlene McKenna (Rose Erksine)
Charlene McKenna plays Rose - the wife of Drake who "loves him beyond measure".
She left her good friend Susan's employment to seek fame and fortune on the stahe.
Rose ended up meeting Drake again when she came to his aid and feared he was in danger.
David Dawson (Fred Best)
The Last Kingdom star David Dawson plays reporter Fred Best, who is often pestering H-Division officers for the latest information on cases.
Fred was the reporter who dubbed the Whitechapel murderer "Jack the Ripper".
In the first series his ear was cut off by Frank Goodnight.
Anna Burnett (Mathilda Reid)
Anna Burnett plays Detective Inspector Reid's long-lost daughter Mathilda in the series.
She had a traumatic reunion with her father but went on to settle with her father in Hampton-on-Sea.
But Mathilda finds it difficult to not be drawn back to the East End...
Clive Russell (Ch. Insp. Fred Abberline)
Game of Thrones star Clive Russell plays Chief Inspector Fred Abberline in the series and is a good friend of Reid's.
He helps greatly with the investigation - though does declare Homer Jackson the Ripper at one point.
His character is based on a man by the same name who led the real Jack the Ripper investigation.
Jonas Armstrong (Nathaniel)
Former Robin Hood star Jonas Armstrong plays Abel Croker's assistant and Augustus Dove's long-lost brother.
He has a dark past and is linked to a string of murders.
Nathaniel turns up in series five of Ripper Street.
Killian Scott (Augustus Dove)
Love/Hate actor Killian Scott plays Assistant Commissioner Augustus Dove.
Dove turns up in series five of Ripper Street and is the reason behind H Division receiving more funding and positive press coverage.
He is a child of Whitechapel himself.
David Threlfall (Abel Croker)
David Threlfall plays crooked Thames wharfinger Abel Croker - a man of enormous self-interest but wild charisma.
Abel instils loyalty and fear in all who fall into his ambit and was introduced in series four.
And that ambit is the London docks, a place where Victoria’s great empire finds its nexus. There’s not a single arrival here – animal, mineral, vegetable or human – he doesn’t know about.
Matthew Lewis (Sgt. Drum Drummond)
Harry Potter star Matthew Lewis plays Sgt. Drum Drummond, who was introduced in series four.
Desk Sergeant Drummond was hired by Drake and understands the high value of rapid access to information.
From finger-printing to X-rays to criminal cataloguing, Drum represents the new generation of coppers using every resource available to collar the villainy of Whitechapel.
When did Ripper Street start on BBC?
The fifth season of the Amazon Prime show returned to BBC Two on June 19 at 9pm and continues weekly.
The show is set in Whitechapel in the East End of London and was set in 1889, six months after the infamous Jack the Ripper murders.
Amazon Prime users were able to view the full six episodes in October 2016.
