The 67-year-old explained that ordeal began after she had gone for lunch last Wednesday and ate some scallops. By Thursday she was beginning to feel unwell and went to the doctors, who believed she had food poisoning.

Lady C told the panel: "I then began to get confused on Saturday morning and my bladder had completely shut down.  I was told by a doctor in my family that I needed to get to a hospital. He said I had the classical symptoms of sepsis.

"The funny thing is that I was already more aware of sepsis than most people because my close friend had just died from it."
