Jim Carrey accuses tragic ex-girlfriend Cathriona White’s mum of bidding to buy new pad
Carrey posts new legal papers where mother Brigid Sweetman asks for a new house because she was being blamed for daughter's death
JIM Carrey claims his suicide lover’s mum tried to get him to buy her a new house, saying: “She loves only money.”
The Mask actor, filed explosive legal papers alleging Brigid Sweetman emailed him to say she was receiving abusive messages following Cathriona White’s suicide.
He says trolls blamed her for White’s death due to a “horrific and degrading” Facebook message she left on her daughter’s birthday, before she took her own life.
Carrey, 54, claimed Sweetman told him she was “on the point of killing herself” and asked him to buy her a house – becoming “angry and bitter” when he refused.
She branded him a "slimey snake" in emails submitted with his court documents.
The bombshell court papers stated: “It is deplorable that Sweetman has the gall to portray herself as the grieving mother. She loves only money.”
Carrey’s declaration - which includes detailed testimony, emails and even snaps of him and his ex-lover – is the latest legal twist in the bitter fallout from White’s suicide in September 2015.
Both Sweetman and White's ex-husband, Mark Burton, have filed wrongful death lawsuits against Carrey, saying she killed herself after he gave her STDs.
Carrey is now seeking to put the litigation on pause until Sweetman posts a $372,700 (£300,000) bond to cover the actor’s defence.
In his response, filed to a court in Los Angeles, Carrey detailed his love for White but told how she married Burton behind his back to secure a green card and stay in the US.
The Bruce Almighty star stated: “Between 2012 and 2015 I was involved in two romantic relationships with Cathriona White.
“Although there were times during this period we were broken up, for much of the time between 2012 and 2015 we were together as a couple.”
Carrey claimed he “paid for apartments and a rental home” for White and also gave her a “weekly stipend of $800 (£650)” in addition to taking care of “many other expenses”.
In late 2012 White first brought up the idea of marriage to obtain a green card, but after Carrey turned her down he was shocked to find she had wed Burton.
He said: “To my surprise I later learned that in January 2013 Cat married a man in Las Vegas for her green card, while at the same time maintaining her actual relationship with me.
“Cat was regularly with me at my home in January 2013 and I was supporting her financially, and we were very much in love.
“I never met her green card husband Mark Burton until after Cat's death, nor did Cat discuss with me any details of her marriage to him while she was alive.
“Nor did she ever tell me that she had a wedding or that she had ever been courted by Mr Burton and she never wore a wedding ring.”
Carrey denied claims that he gave White STDs – or that this lead to her suicide.
He said: “Normally Cat was very sweet, but when she felt rejected or upset she was prone to making up horrible stories and acting out in vindictive ways.
“Despite the rocky ending of our first relationship, Cat and I decided to put our breakup behind us and start seeing each other again.
“What followed was a new relationship, with ten wonderful, loving months together of the most beautiful relationship ever.”
The comedy hero told how one week before her death, White became “aggravated” because he went to be with his daughter, who had been in hospital and forced to undergo “emergency surgery”.
A few days later she took her life by overdosing on pills – on the third anniversary of her beloved dad’s death.
Carrey described Sweetman and Burton’s allegations against him as a “shameless money grab”.
He attached emails and text from Sweetman to him, where she revealed she wanted to find a new house and said she was worried that the "science" crowd may have caused White to kill herself.
White was believed to be a Scientologist.
Sweetman also branded Carrey a "whimpering old man" and "slimey snake" in emails submitted to the court by Carrey.
Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for Burton and Sweetman, hit straight back at Carrey after he filed the papers.
He said: “Jim Carrey filed a baseless motion with the court as part of his continued attack on a grieving mother. His conduct is disgusting and dishonest. Who attacks a mother of a dead girl?
“Carrey and his ‘fixer’ lawyers are trying to deceive the media and the public.
“They are making up facts they know to be untrue in an effort to save Carrey’s career, which was over when he lied about not having STDs.
“They should release the results and let people decide for themselves who lacks credibility.
“Carrey is a fraud and when he is forced to testify under oath, the ugly truth will be laid bare. We are confident that the court will see through the nonsense Carrey is peddling.”
