NEW TikTok crazes pop up all the time, whether it be a new dance routine, or a spoof video.

But one video that stood out from the millions of others, and went viral for the wrong reasons. was couch guy.

Who is the couch guy on TikTok?

In September 2021 TikTok user Lauren Zarras (@laurenzarras)  surprising her boyfriend, Robbie McCoy, at the University of Virginia.

Set to Ellie Goulding’s song Still Falling for You, the video was meant to be a romantic

However, some viewers watched and concluded that the boyfriend, dubbed "couch guy", wasn’t that excited to see his girlfriend.

Robbie, who was sitting on a couch with three other girls, looked surprised to see Lauren enter the room.

He slowly stood up to wrap his arms around her and flashed a wide smile.

But some eagle-eyed viewers claimed they saw him trading something with one of the girls he was sitting next to on the couch.

From there, numerous other TikTok users uploaded their own takes on the situation, breaking down what they think was happening.

While others just parodied the experience with their own version, as they brutally mocked the young couple.

What have people said about the couch guy on TikTok?

Instead of being popular for the intended romantic reasons, the video went viral for all the wrong ones.

One person commented: ";He hugged her like she was his aunt at Christmas dinner."

While another added, "I've never seen someone look so unhappy to see their girlfriend."

Lauren Zarras eventually felt like she had to defend herself from the cyberbullying.

She told her followers: “Breaks my heart that people can watch a special moment and bring so much negativity.

“Please think before you assume anything about my relationship.”

While her boyfriend Robbie McCroy said: "While the couch guy meme was lighthearted on its surface.

"It turned menacing as TikTok users obsessively invaded the lives of Lauren, our friends, and me—people with no previous desire for internet fame, let alone infamy."
