Boy George leaves fans in tears as he sings a cover of David Bowie’s Starman for Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer

BOY George left fans in tears tonight as he performed a moving version of David Bowie’s Starman for Stand Up To Cancer.

The singer was joined by the NHS Choir as he sang the late star’s classic song as part of to raise money for cancer research.

Images of Bowie, who died in January after battling liver cancer for 18 months at the age of 69, flashed up as he sang.

And viewers took to Twitter to praise his performance as one wrote: “@BoyGeorge beautiful version of Starman that. Wow!”

Another added, “Well done @BoyGeorge really proud of you what an amazing performance Bowie will definitely be looking down and felling very proud of you,” as another said: “That was a brilliant performance of Starman by Boy George and the NHS Choir. So moving.”

Some said they were left feeling very emotional as one fan wrote: “@BoyGeorge beautiful performance tonight, in tears & a real homage to David Bowie. Your voice sounds incredible.”

And another added: “@BoyGeorge your rendition of Starman amazing filled me with tears. Lost mom to cancer. Thank you.”

And some even called on the star to release it as a fundraising single.

One wrote: “Release Starman at Christmas. It's sad but it will raise more then and that was an out of this world version!”

Another added: “They should release that Boy George cover of Starman as a single, raise money and a tribute to Bowie.”

Speaking to presenter Davina McCall after his performance, Boy George said: “It was amazing to be singing with the NHS choir. It was beautiful.

“A friend of mine said when he [Bowie] passed away, that he was family and I think to a lot of people who grew up in the Seventies, he was like one of our relatives, he was part of us. Losing him was just like losing a family member.”

He also revealed that he had been touched by cancer and said: “My grandmother, my aunt two years ago, a close friend very recently. I know so many people who are fighting it and what’s amazing is that so many people are fighting it now.“
