And after breaking a bone in her foot, she was forced to go to work and present the news in her trainers.

Speaking to the Radio Times, she said: "I was about 10 feet up, then I landed and smashed my heel and dislocated the bone above it.

"I actually heard it. I was meant to go skiing three weeks later so I was hoping I hadn't broken it. But it was very painful and it swelled up to the size of my thigh... so I realised I needed help."

Bruce, 52, underwent emergency surgery and doctors fitted a five-inch metal screw and bracket in her foot.

She said: "I was in a cast for nine weeks and an air boot for six. My surgeon said it will take a year to fully recover and it will never be the same."

But Bruce, who also hosts Antiques Roadshow, said five months on she is wearing normal footwear again and has even started running again, although "at a snail's pace!"

Fiona has been with the BBC since 1989 and started presenting Antiques Roadshow  in 1998.

And while she was recovering from her injury, she celebrated a small victory this summer after she won her battle against plans to build luxury flats at the end of her garden – after arguing it would violate her privacy.

She said the plans would leave her garden flooded and it would ruin her “treasured oasis of peace and privacy”.
