DARK TIMES

EastEnders’ Lee Carter’s depression rears its ugly head as his new bride Whitney Dean desperately tries to comfort him

Their wedding day should have been the happiest day of his life but Lee Carter is struggle with depression but can Whitney help him?

AS far as EastEnders weddings go, the nuptials of Whitney Dean and Lee Carter were probably the most unremarkable there ever was.

Pretty much nothing happened, apart from them saying their vows, Ben making a drunken pass at Johnny and Jay pinching some of the wedding fund. How very un-EastEnders.

In fact, the day should probably go down in Walford folklore as being the only wedding that hasn’t involved someone giving birth, doing a runner, being in a car smash or getting raped.

So that’s a good start for the new Mr and Mrs Carter.

Unfortunately, it ended with Lee feigning sleep so he didn’t have to consummate the marriage.

And obviously, that’s not so good.

And the silent tears after his new wife told him she loves him, suggested that this probably wasn’t the happiest day of his life.

It looks like Lee – played brilliantly by Danny-boy Hatchard – is slipping back down into the depression that almost split him and Whitney up once before.

The signs are all there. As well as the loss of libido, he’s been questioning his own worth for most of the week.

“You know what you said at my stag, about Whitney being out of my league?” Lee asked his old army mate. “Do you reckon she’ll see that? Maybe not now but in a few years she’ll see that I’m not good enough for her?”

Forlorn Lee was covered in glue and feathers at the time (some kind of army prank) and he couldn’t even see the ridiculousness of the situation.

So is this wedding the beginning of another dark period for Lee? We all know that Whitney (Shona McGarty) can’t get away with being as happy as she was in tonight’s episode.

Happiness never goes unpunished in Walford.

Danny-boy is leaving the soap soon and Lee has already been pushed to the brink of suicide once before.

Is his exit going to be another tragedy for the Carters and Whitney?
