Chris finished third after coupling up with ex Olivia Attwood, with the pair splitting six months later.

Yet today Chris shocked fans with a sorry snap showing him in a hospital gown and woollen hat, with a tube inserted in his arm.

He candidly told fans he had suffered "the worst night" of his life and branded his life "pathetic," as he opened up on the reason for his treatment.

In his emotional Instagram caption Chris hinted at a lively weekend as he wrote: "So basically all my antics on Saturday have caused this.

"When I was posting about running 4k I was not truly hungover Sunday and Monday, but I was chronically dehydrated and have alcohol hepatitis.

"Not cool, not cool at all.

"Essentially my liver is damaged and couldn't consume the alcohol consumptions and the bloods have also shown that."

Hepatitis is an umbrella term describing inflammation of the liver.

It can be the result of heavy drinking or a viral infection.

In a second hospital snap, showing him looking sleepy and propped up against a wall, he added: "Our NHS are insanely good, as we know.

"They have been thorough and over-the-top friendly to me which is the perfect combo.

"I haven't managed to consume water that's why I am on this drip, a sip of water makes me feel sick.

"I am ruined. I have learned my lesson.

"My issue though, quite clear.

"I went for a run on Sunday and I went to a class Monday and did a 45-minute circuit, burnt 550 calories, then went to the sauna to sweat again for 45 minutes thinking I'm getting the alcohol out but in fact I am just torturing my body."

In his final slide, posting a selection of images from his reality TV stint, he added: "Takes me back to the day I left the villa as I had the same thing but from sunstroke.

"Last night was the worst night of my life.

"Hallucinating, sick and the back pain is the worst pain ever. Dull ache relentless.

"Been at the hospital since 5am, went to another clinic at 8:30am, to be sent straight back here to sort my pathetic life out.

"Moral is, NHS are the best and don't go and watch Sunderland [FC] the same day as a night out. It ruins you."

These days Chris spends his working days entertaining legions of dedicated fans on screen by covering sports including horse racing and cricket for the likes of ITV and the BBC.

After his villa exit, the keen horserider exclusively told The Sun how people did not take him seriously as a sports presenter.

What is alcohol hepatitis?

CHRIS Hughes is battling alcohol hepatitis - but what is it?

Hepatitis is an umbrella term describing inflammation of the liver.

It can be the result of heavy drinking or a viral infection.

There are several different types of the disease which are caused by different viruses and are treated in different ways.

The NHS states: "Alcoholic hepatitis, which is unrelated to infectious hepatitis, is a potentially serious condition that can be caused by alcohol misuse over a longer period.

"When this develops, it may be the first time a person is aware they're damaging their liver through alcohol.

"Less commonly, alcoholic hepatitis can occur if you drink a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time (binge drinking).

"The liver damage associated with mild alcoholic hepatitis is usually reversible if you stop drinking permanently.

"Severe alcoholic hepatitis, however, is a serious and life-threatening illness.

"Many people die from the condition each year in the UK, and some people only find out they have liver damage when their condition reaches this stage."

After the show, Chris starred in a spin-off show called Straight Out of Love Island, with his best friend Kem Cetinay.

The pair also topped the iTunes chart with their single a Little Bit Leave It.
