RAPPER Kanye West told a shocked audience in California Thursday night that he didn't vote in the recent US election — but that if he had, he would have voted for Donald Trump.

In what one fan described as a 25-minute rant, Kanye also told the crowd that Trump's campaign was "absolutely genius because it f***ing worked", and that black people needed to stop being "distracted" by racism and accept that the US is a racist country.

The non-voter added that he himself plans to run for president in 2020.

His comments were met with both boos and cheers from fans at the gig in San Jose, where Kanye was kicking off the second leg of his Saint Pablo tour.

One concert-goer reportedly threw something at Kanye, prompting him to threaten to cancel the show.

Another unhappy fan tweeted: "i paid $40 to listen to a trump supporter rant for 3 hours n play 4 songs."

Trump's surprise victory over Hillary Clinton on November 8 has led to demonstrations across America, with protesters calling the president-elect out for racism, among other things.

Kanye's comments come 11 years after he famously went off-script during a charity telethon for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, telling the camera: "George Bush doesn't care about black people."
