Nicole Kidman reveals struggle to help husband Keith Urban ‘save himself’ from alcohol addiction
The country singer checked himself into rehab in 2007 but has since gone from strength to strength
NICOLE Kidman has opened up about her experience of helping her husband Keith Urban through his alcohol addiction.
The 49-year-old actress, who has been married to the Aussie singer since 2006, revealed that she was forced to take a step back as her husband faced his demons and fought them.
Keith eventually checked himself into rehab in 2007, and she admitted that she was forced to tell him he had to be the one to make a change as she couldn't fix it for him.
Speaking in The Jess Cagle Interview, she revealed: "It is a very big thing for people like me who go, 'I can take care of you. I can do it.' At some point, you just have to say, 'I love you and I’m here when you decide to do the work.
"'If you don’t, then that’s it.' It's not easy, but there’s an extraordinary life if you do get there through help."
The Think of Me singer followed his wife words and credited her as an 'inspiration' that got him through his difficult task of kicking the booze for good.
Speaking in 2007, he said: "Nicole listened to her heart and did what she felt was the right thing to do. To see that kind of love in action, that’s very moving and deeply inspiring and just makes me want to be a better man."
Since his stint in rehab, the pair have become stronger than ever - having two children Sunday, 8, and five-year-old Faith in their ten year marriage.
Outnumbered three to one by women in his family, Keith has admitted that his female-centric family life has proven to be a learning curve - especially seeing as he grew up in a house with only men.
He said: "[She's] an incredible mom. Loving, maternal, and [she's] teaching me a lot about how to raise children, especially girls. I have no reference for girls."
As for anyone else thinking of seeking help, Nicole added: "[I'd advise you to] put your hand up, to reach out.
"There is absolutely help out there. You can’t save somebody, they’ve got to save themselves."
